NEW YORK — As the New York Yankees suffered yet another demoralizing loss, this time 5–3 to the Miami Marlins at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, broadcaster Michael Kay didn’t hold back — delivering a sharp critique of Jazz Chisholm Jr. for his untimely ejection and behavior during the game.
In the top of the fourth inning, with Miami leading 1–0 and Chisholm on first base after a walk, the Marlins star was tossed by first base umpire John Tumpane following an argument over a checked swing. The ejection — Chisholm’s second of the season — came just as the Marlins were building momentum against Yankees starter Nestor Cortes.
Kay, the longtime voice of the Yankees on YES Network, blasted Chisholm on-air for what he called “selfish” behavior that could have cost Miami the game.
“That’s a selfish act by Jazz Chisholm,” Kay said during the live broadcast. “The only reason he got thrown out is because he wouldn’t shut up.”
“Your team is 30–47. You just got on base. What are you doing?” Kay added. “If I were the Marlins, I’d be furious with him.”
Though Miami went on to win, the incident underscored the Marlins’ own struggles this season — and drew attention away from the Yankees’ ongoing woes.
Yankees Spiraling in June
Tuesday’s loss was the Yankees’ 11th in their last 15 games, and their third straight defeat overall. Manager Aaron Boone, already under mounting scrutiny, watched his team squander a promising start by Cortes and strand runners in scoring position late in the game.
Offensively, the Yankees continued to slump. Aaron Judge was held hitless, and the Bronx Bombers failed to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities.
“We just need to play cleaner,” Boone said postgame. “It’s frustrating right now, but we’ve got to find a way to fight through it.”
The Yankees now sit at 51–34 — still in playoff position but fading quickly in the AL East standings.
Chisholm Responds with Subtle Swipe
After the game, Chisholm appeared to downplay the ejection and even took a veiled jab at Kay’s criticism.
“I’m just out there competing,” Chisholm told reporters. “People are going to talk — that’s what they do.”
He also posted a cryptic message on social media after the game, writing: “Y’all mad I play with passion?” — a quote that sparked immediate reaction among fans and pundits alike.
A Game Overshadowed
While the Marlins walked away with a rare win, the storylines quickly shifted off the scoreboard. For the Yankees, the focus remains on a troubling June slump that’s raising alarms across the organization. For Chisholm, the spotlight now includes more than just his bat or glove — it’s about maturity, composure, and the spotlight that comes with being a franchise face.
