The “bat boy” who started his dream in Maracay
Born in Maracay, Venezuela in 1990, Altuve grew up with Salvador Pérez – now also an MLB star. But due to his small stature, he was repeatedly rejected when trying out for big teams like the Angels, Cubs, Yankees… At age 16, he went to the Astros’ recruiting session – rejected for being too short; but refused to give up. The next day, Altuve returned, determined to the end, convincing former player Al Pedrique: “Let me prove it.”

The Astros signed him for a paltry $15,000 – and from there, his legendary journey began.

Climbing from Venezuelan baseball to MLB stardom
Starting in the Venezuelan Summer League, Altuve was once called “enano” (dwarf). But after an impressive streak of .343 AVG, he was quickly promoted to the Big North – and to MLB just a few years later. In Houston, Altuve not only became a nine-time All-Star, three-time AL leader in AVG, two World Series, seven Silver Sluggers, and a Gold Glove – but also redefined the balance. The 6-foot-1 kid became one of the greatest second basemen in history.

The Injured Champion – the Best & Most Durable
From the 2017 MVP with his historic home runs to his fan-pleasing walk-off, Altuve proved that height and prejudice can’t limit him. Two World Series (2017, 2022), along with more than 2,300 hits, 300 stolen bases, and 700 extra-base hits – he ranks among the greatest in Europe and America.

Influence beyond off the pitch
Jose not only conquers fans with his speed and technique. He is also an inspirational figure for millions of short, small people: “If I can do it, you can too.” Altuve said: “I want to open the door for my generation – where opportunities are equal.”

Humble lifestyle, giant heart
Despite his towering reputation, Altuve is always humble and simple. When he goes around his neighborhood, he still stops to greet fans and help the community. When the Argentinian fans honor him, Altuve not only smiles but also remembers: His dream started with a small ball given to him by his parents when he was 7 years old.

Jose Altuve is not just a baseball phenomenon – he is a symbol: of faith, determination and perseverance. From Maracay to MLB, from the “dwarf” who was laughed at to the immortal legend – his journey is a song of victory over all prejudices.
