Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc across multiple states, leaving over four million homes and businesses in Florida without power and resulting in at least 40 confirmed deaths by Friday afternoon. The storm made landfall in Florida as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, causing severe destruction, especially in the Big Bend region, which had already experienced two other natural disasters within the past year.
In Florida, the storm caused the deaths of seven individuals, with some victims tragically drowning in flash floods and others crushed by falling trees. Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia reported 11 fatalities in his state, including a first responder, while two deaths were attributed to tornadoes linked to the storm. The toll is expected to rise as authorities continue to assess the damage.
The hurricane’s fast-moving winds, reaching up to 140 mph (225 kph), and heavy rainfall have resulted in catastrophic flooding, landslides, and significant infrastructure damage. In North Carolina, a four-year-old girl was killed in a weather-related car accident as the storm passed through. In response to the disaster, Governor Kemp has mobilized 1,000 additional National Guard troops to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.
Widespread damage has been reported, with around 115 structures in Valdosta severely affected and 152 roads closed due to debris and flooding. Videos shared on social media depicted torrential rain, uprooted trees, and destroyed buildings in the impacted areas.
As the storm moves northward at approximately 30 mph (48 kph), flash flood warnings have been issued across various regions, including Atlanta and its airport. Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing, with officials urging residents to heed evacuation orders and remain cautious.
