Angie Stone, a Grammy-nominated R&B singer renowned for her soulful voice and significant contributions to the music industry, tragically passed away at the age of 63 following a car accident near Montgomery, Alabama, in the early hours of Saturday, March 1, 2025.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Interstate 65, approximately five miles south of Montgomery. Stone was traveling back to Atlanta from Alabama in a 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, accompanied by seven other passengers. According to reports, the van flipped over and was subsequently struck by a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia truck driven by a 33-year-old man from Texas. Stone was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other passengers were transported to Baptist Medical Center for treatment.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone began her musical journey in the late 1970s as a member of The Sequence, one of the pioneering all-female hip-hop groups. The trio gained recognition with their hit single “Funk You Up,” which has been sampled by numerous artists over the years.
Transitioning to a solo career in the 1990s, Stone became a prominent figure in the neo-soul movement. Her debut solo album, “Black Diamond,” released in 1999, featured the hit single “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” which topped Billboard’s Adult R&B airplay chart for ten weeks. She continued her success with albums like “Mahogany Soul” in 2001, which included the popular track “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” and “The Art of Love & War” in 2007, featuring the Grammy-nominated song “Baby.” Throughout her career, Stone received three Grammy nominations and was honored with the Soul Music Icon Award at the Black Music Honors in 2021.
Stone’s influence extended beyond her music. She was also an accomplished actress, with appearances in television shows like “Girlfriends” and films such as “The Hot Chick” and “Ride Along.”
